The Notebooks of Humphry Davy: Inspiring Frankenstein


	Serving...The Davy Notebooks project, funded by a&#38;nbsp;£1 million grant from&#38;nbsp;the UKRI’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Key stakeholders include Lancaster University, UCL, and the Royal Institution. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

The goal
To design an accessible exhibition showcasing nineteenth-century chemist Humphry Davy’s original notebooks. To tell the story of Davy’s unique integration of the arts and sciences.&#38;nbsp;
On display at Wordsworth Grasmere until March 2024.&#38;nbsp;It was displayed at the Royal Institution from September to November 2023.
	What I didI designed graphics for a traveling exhibition with the above title.
I also led the re-writing/re-storying process of the original academic-oriented writing for the displays. I condensed the text by 75%, making the content more engaging and accessible to underserved populations. Through this process, I also tackled complex but important issues like “scientific” racism —the first public project ever to do so at the Royal Institution.

How I did itFor both the design and writing, I followed the accessible and inclusive exhibition design principles outlined by the Smithsonian Institution.

For exhibitions, I learned that accessible design is the top priority. I kept things as clean and simple as possible.

On display at the Royal Institution, Northumberland and Wordsworth Grasmere in 2023-24 as a traveling exhibition.

︎ Notes on Design&#38;nbsp;
The neon green dog-eared pages are a minimalistic nod to the notebook theme. It adds just the right touch of design, without being overbearing. The title font is Josephin Sans. The off-kilter “e” introduces a playful and welcoming tone, while still being a fully legible font. For body text, I bolded a clean serif font for maximum legibility.I chose to juxtapose the colours of neon green against a rich black to invoke Frankenstein and a Victorian Gothic tone, the art and culture of which Davy played a part in inspiring with his chemical experiments. I added "post-it note" (square) boards throughout the exhibition to highlight stand-out quotes to make the viewer feel closer to Davy as a human being.

The Record Sun: UMusic Festival 2024 (Universal Music UK)


	Serving...All Universal Music UK staff. Completed as a response to a D&#38;amp;AD New Blood Awards 2024 brief (view in the slideshow below).&#38;nbsp;

The challenge
To create a festival event poster and visual suite for Universal Music UK staff’s annual autumn concert celebration, the “UMusic Festival.”&#38;nbsp;
	What I didI designed a statement poster, an email invite, and in-venue branding.&#38;nbsp;

How I did itCombining the inspirations of the “UMusic” name, sound waves, vinyl records, and the magical city of London, I created a bespoke musical brand identity.

“Students First” Student Diary


	Serving......the Alma Mater Society (AMS), the student society serving 50,000+ students at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. It operates at an annual $30 million budget. It&#38;nbsp;spent $25,000 undergoing a rebranding in summer 2021.

The goal
To create a valuable resource for new, first-year UBC students that boldly debuted the AMS’ new brand identity putting “students first” and as a 100% student-led, student-dedicated organization.

	What I did I designed and wrote the entire 40-page diary + 10-page survival guide, with minimal oversight.

How I did itAs the first major design piece that set the tone for a new era at the AMS, I kept “students first” as my guiding design principle and a focus not only on what the AMS does, but why they do it.
Due to COVID-19, about half of the student body would be arriving in-person on campus for the first time. Thus, I felt it was especially important to create something welcoming, resourceful and optimistic.

︎ Notes on Design
The cover features 2 students sitting on a 2-way swing. The design conveys the inevitable ups and downs of a post-secondary education—yet, through it all, one will find those who will swing by their side, cheering them on along the way, including the AMS.On every page, I embodied the new brand motto "students first." I asked: What do students really need? What would students really find useful? I then proceeded to add various design elements that supported this mission. For example:
	︎&#38;nbsp;On the monthly spread, important dates are listed on the right, and highlighted in the calendar.&#38;nbsp;On the weekly spread, fun facts and uplifting blog posts are linked at the bottom using QR codes.
	︎ On the last page of the diary, I wrote a letter to first-year students to add a personal touch.
	︎&#38;nbsp;I innovated an approachable organizational chart to explain how the AMS works (which was a mystery for most students).

A Starry Holiday (Card)


	Serving...&#38;nbsp;
...the Alma Mater Society (AMS), the student society serving 50,000+ students at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. It operates at an annual $30 million budget. It spent $25,000 undergoing a rebranding in summer 2021.

The goal
To create a flexible, nondenominational holiday card that can be used by&#38;nbsp;anyone at the AMS to gift to anyone in their network.
 
	What I did
I designed and illustrated the card (digital and print versions).

How I did it
Celebrating the holiday break was another chance to show off the new AMS brand. Inspired by the AMS logo and architecture, I translated iconic elements of both into a fun, winter wonderland scene. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

“Students First” Website&#38;nbsp;
Serving... ...the Alma Mater Society (AMS), the student society serving 50,000+ students at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. It operates at an annual $30 million budget. It spent $25,000 undergoing a rebranding in summer 2021.

The goalTo make&#38;nbsp;ams.ubc.ca easier and simpler to use—both on the front-end, to help any UBC student find the information they need, and on the back-end, to help any AMS employee update information more efficiently.
 The website design also needed to align with the&#38;nbsp;AMS’ new brand identity putting “students first.” 

	What I didI designed new and final iterations of the website’s UI/UX designs, based on existing UX research. Then, I led the design QA process with the web developer. I also helped with content migration via Wordpress.

How I did it
Through an iterative process, I brought the low-fidelity prototypes to its final form. I integrated the brand identity into the website’s design and always considered students’ needs “first” with every design decision.&#38;nbsp;

Lessons LearnedWebsites are fluid, not static. Take advantage of this flexibility. What is a priority? What can you leave to change later?There are often tradeoffs between design and development. Know your design goal inside out so that you can make smart decisions when up against the resource limits. UX research and evaluation make up the essential foundation that informs later design decisions—make sure you do it well, or if you weren’t part of the research team, get to know it well. &#38;nbsp;Designing based on a strong intuition is one way to design. However, conducting evaluations to find out whether your designs actually solved the problem it set out to do is the only true way to validate your designs.
